Art Williams is 80 years old and is still going strong. He spoke before thousands at a huge Dave Ramsey EntreLeadership event. Art wasn’t always interested in business. He was a content high school football coach; and then his father passed away at a young age. It was tragic enough to lose his father and for his mother to lose her husband so prematurely, but when the shockingly small benefit check arrived from his dad’s whole-life insurance policy – he was shaken. Although his dad had paid a lot of money in premiums over the years, the actual cash benefit was small. Art questioned his CPA cousin about it, who explained that ‘whole life’ was a bad investment; it’s better to buy term insurance and invest the difference.

He discovered that whole life was a colossal cash cow for the insurance industry; although they sold the higher-commission whole life product to their clients, every insurance salesperson carried ‘term insurance’ for their own families.

He got mad! He became so passionate that ‘Buy Term and Invest the Difference’ became his crusade. He wanted to destroy cash value -he called it ‘trash value’- insurance after he saw what a ‘screw job’ it was for his parents. He was obsessed with correcting this injustice!

Art’s impact has been astonishing. By enrolling others in his crusade to destroy ‘the enemy’ and eliminate their ‘trash value’ insurance products, his business soon exceeded the combined sales of Prudential and New York Life. The entire life insurance industry had to change because of him.

Today there is a new ‘enemy’ to disrupt! While modern medicine has provided many miracles, conversely the health care system itself is the #3 cause of death! Drugs and surgery are a two-edged sword, lives can be wonderfully impacted or seriously harmed.

My mom never knew her father, as he died in his mid-twenties from appendicitis. Seventy-five years later, my oldest son had the same thing happen. However today an appendicitis is typically just putting up with the inconvenience of a simple surgery instead of certain death. Almost everyone today knows someone who’s had appendicitis and they recovered from it only because of modern medicine. One of my daughters contracted spinal meningitis and would certainly be dead but for antibiotics.

However, 3 out of 4 adults age 50+ take at least one prescription medication on a regular basis. More than 8 in 10 (86 percent) of those age 65+ regularly take prescription drugs, and 53 percent take four or more regular medications. If drugs were the answer, then we should be the healthiest people on the planet…we aren’t – not by a long shot!

Noted economist Paul Zane Pilzer stated that: “It is more profitable for medical suppliers to produce products consumers use for the rest of their lives than to make products that a consumer might use only once. Invariably, this means developing products that treat the symptoms of diseases rather than the cause or the cure.”
